Boycott, boycott, boycott!

Here we are again, ready for another post on how to help Palestine. My first post was a basic history lesson on what is going on, but now I am going to start posting about what we can do from this side of the world. Please check my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/thetwinshadows/) for more posts and updates on everything that is happening. They have been censoring some of mine and other, much more prominent posters. It is disgusting and we MUST call them out on it.

But I digress, as I often do. So let’s talk about boycotting Israel. How can we consume in an ethical way, in order to hurt Zionists where it hurts the most: their wallet? I am going to post a list of some brands that you can avoid in order to minimise your contribution to the Israeli “movement”.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

Alright so technically not a brand. But the West Bank is occupied and the Israelis took the fertile soil to set up illegal farmlands and they send most of it to Europe. But keep an eye out for things sourced from the following brands:  AdaFreshKedem HadarimMehadrin and Terra.

COSMETICS

Looking pretty is important, but not if you are funding apartheid in the process. The main target here is the Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories, Limited company, which takesmud from occupied Palestinian land to manufacture their products.

How can a beauty company be so ugly.

ICE CREAM

I know, this is going to hurt. But it hurts Palestine a lot more. Ben and Jerry’s are at the top of this list and the most famous one. I will link a quick video that explains exactly why they are so bad, but let’s just say that it involves selling and franchising in illegally occupied territories.

Never again.
No Justice, No Sweets. A video created by a group of Vermonters with a desire for justice.

There are many more but if I was to make a small text for each one, I would spend the rest of the month writing this post. So I am going to upload a list with the main ones that we can boycott. These images are not mine and I will try and provide sources when possible in case you want to go and check them out yourself. Please do your research and make sure that you are not spreading false information. I tried to make sure that I checked every single one of these, but I may have missed some. If I have, please let me know on my Instagram and I will try and rectify it.

Also, I have used the BDS movement to help me in the writing of this post. Please check it out at https://bdsmovement.net/get-involved/what-to-boycott.

A few more companies that need to be focused on.

Like I said before, these are just some of the many brands that we can boycott. When you go shopping, make sure to always check the country of origin. And if it says Israel, remember that it is not a real country so what it really means is Palestine.

For Freedom. For Justice. For Palestine.

The words currently echoing around the world. But for some, these are the words that they have been hoping for for the past few decades, after being oppressed and humiliated in their own homeland. Now let’s make this very clear, Israel does not own Palestine. In fact, Zionists are taking Palestinian lands by force, claiming to do so because they are “the chosen people of God”, when most of them are not even remotely religious. This is a power play for political reasons, plain and simple. Let’s look back at the history of the so called “State of Israel” (I will go into some detail, but I will avoid going to deep into every single one or I might as well write a whole book on the subject).

In 1917, A man by the name of Arthur Balfour wrote to the British Jewish leader Walter Rothschild and claimed that the British government endorsed Zionism. This was the ball that got the avalanche going, as at the end of WW1 the UK was given the mandate for Palestine because they conquered it from the Ottoman empire. The British then decided that the best way to deal with this was to separate the country into an Arab state and a Jewish state. This was met with heavy resistance and led to what we know today as the Arab revolt of 1936.

First official partition proposal of 1937

Now this particular revolt is not easy to summarise, but I will do my best. It comprised of two main phases:

Phase 1 – The Higher Arab Committee carried out political protest and strikes but were quickly brought down by a combination of political concessions, international treaties and the threat of martial law.

Phase 2 – The peasant revolution, which was a lot less PC and a lot more violent. This revolt was brutally suppressed and its consequences were felt all the way to 1948, but we will get there.

This revolt is important historically because it led to the British giving crucial aid to a Zionist militia known as Haganah, which most of us now know as the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF. Their original purpose was to “defend” Jewish settlements from Arab attacks with the aid of the British, but they would eventually turn on them after the refusal from the UK to cancel the White papers 1939 restriction on Jewish immigration. At this point the now-IDF decided to turn to violent sabotage activities and illegal infiltration of Jewish immigrants into Palestine.

Proposed partition of 1947
Actual partition of 1947

Here I pause to add a note that Zionists say that they are legal in Palestine, but their very first steps into it were illegal in nature. But I digress.

At this stage the UN attempted to split Palestine into two. The plan was not well received by Haganah, as by this point they were the biggest fighting force in the area, and the start of the 1947 civil war began. This was the point at which the British decided that they had done enough, and left the Palestinians and the Zionists to their own devices. This, of course, escalated into the more well known 1948 Arab-Israeli war, when the surrounding Arab states invaded Palestine in an attempt to remove the now established Zionist state from the country. This lasted for 10 months and by the end of it the State of Israel had most of the country under control and around 700,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes in the area that became Israel, and they became Palestinian refugees.

I again pause here to ask that we all reflect on it for a second. The Zionists never had an official claim to Palestine and only won it after repeatedly, and ILLEGALLY, encroaching on it. Yet they claim to have always had a rightful ownership to the land. This whole conflict started because the British were too cowardly to stay there and fix the mess they created. I love the UK, but this is one of many severe mistakes in their long history.

This is all to say that, while some people will claim that there is no right side in this conflict, it is clear that there is one side that has been screwed over as a result of multiple wars that depleted them economically and caused them to lose everything to an occupying state that only ever managed to win because of British continued support in the earlier years. I could continue on and on about it, but we have all heard what happens from this point on.

Now we are in 2021 and the Palestinian people are still suffering these effects. These effects that started in 1917, not 1948. And yet we remained silent. For decades, we all remained silent while they suffered. They screamed, they yelled and they fought but we didn’t listen. We are finally listening. And we are all shouting “Free Free Palestine”. Don’t let it all be for nothing. Let’s make sure that we don’t repeat the same mistakes as the British did back then. Let’s get involved and STAY involved. Let’s restore justice to Palestine. Let’s truly free Palestine.
